The Gender Sensitization Cell of Lucknow University conducted an event in the series titled 'Spaces' at the Chandrashekhar Azad lawns of the university campus on Wednesday.'Roohani', a girl band of the university and prominent cultural activist and theater artist Mahendra Pal were the focus.
Songs promoting gender equality and women empowerment like "baadal pe paav hain", "dil hai chhota sa", "Aashayen", "o ri chirayiya" were sung. The cell celebrated feminist writer Kamla Bhasin's famous songs like Tod tod ke bandhan, iraade kar buland. Students recited poetry in support of gender equality, over 75 students participated in the event.
It may be noted that this 'GenSen cell' was created in 2020 by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Alok Kumar Rai and since its inception, the cell has been working towards creating gender equality in academia.
The "Spaces" program initiated discussions about gender-based violence, harassment and gender equality among university students in their own spaces such as canteens, lawns, dormitories.
The performance was followed by a discussion between the Gender Sensitization Cell team, the performers and the audience on personal experiences of gender-based violence. The program discussed how our society limits women, the treatment of the transgender community, patriarchy and its effect on boys and men etc.
The convener of the cell Prof Roli Misra from the Department of Economics and her team member Prashant answered questions from the audience and encouraged everyone to speak out against any form of injustice they see around them.
